Tiger spotted at Ranthambore

Our Spring 2012 trip started in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

We began the traditional ‘Golden Triangle’ that comprises Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The imperial glory of the Mughal Empire is revealed in the mausoleums, mosques and palaces of their capitals at Agra, Delhi and Fatehpur Sikri. The highlight being the incomparable Taj Mahal which we saw at both dawn and dusk to get the effect of the differing light conditions on the white marble structure.

The 1,334 sq km National Park at Ranthambore is home to a huge selection of animals, the highlight of which is the large tiger population, and we were privilaged to see a tiger that walked right up to our open truck, not ten feet from us.

Jaipur, the pink city, introduces the princely heritage of Rajasthan. From the City Palace, Amber Fort, Palace of the Winds and the Jantar Mantar Observatory, built in 1728 with 80 foot high sundials that are accurate to a few seconds. While in Jaipur we visited the exquisite Taj Rambagh Palace for dinner in their Rajput Room.

A further highlight, a trip on Indian Railways, took us to Amritsar on the Shatabdi Express. Amritsar is home of the amazing 'Golden Temple' or Harmandir Sahib,  that is the most holy shrine of all Sikhs.  We visited the Temple at night to see the 'Palki Ceremony' where their most sacred book is removed from the Temple and transferrred to a locked room overnight. We visited the Temple again the next day, to see it in daylight and visit the kitchens where 50,000 meals are prepared every day. The Langar or free kitchen was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people of the world regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. "..the Light of God is in all hearts."

We also visited the Indian / Pakistan border at the Wagah Border Point for the highly theatrical ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony where the border gates are slammed shut with dramatic effect to a background of 'Bollywood' style singing and dancing.

The era of the British Raj is reflected in the architectural heritage of the summer hill station capital, Shimla, and administrative centre of McLeod Ganj (upper Dharamsala). These hill stations, at over 2000 metres altitude meant they were a cool retreat during the hot summer months on the plains. The latter now has achieved further prominence as the centre of the Tibetan Government in Exile and residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

While in McLeod Ganj we were extremely lucky to hear the Dalai Lama give one of his very rare teachings to his people, albeit in Tibetan dialect.
