The Grand Tour of Indo China 2002

Itinerary

 

Day 1 – Saturday 5th October - Q
Depart
Edinburgh at 6.30am for Heathrow. Depart LHR at 12.30pm on an overnight flight, via Bangkok, to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

Day 2 – Sunday 6th October
Arrive at
6.05 am in Bangkok then at 11am TG680 to Ho Chi Minh City. Arrive at 12.30pm and transfer to the Rex Hotel for a three-night stay.

Day 3 – Monday 7th October
Travel to Cu Chi to visit the incredible underground tunnel network built by the Vietnamese guerrilla fighters during the long years of the struggle for independence. Afternoon city tour of dynamic Saigon (officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after 1975).

Day 4 – Tuesday 8th October - ]
A full day trip to the watery world of My Tho in the Mekong Delta includes a boat cruise and lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 5 – Wednesday 9th October - Q
Fly to Danang. On arrival visit the
Cham House Museum before transferring to Hoi An for 2-night stay. An afternoon walking tour visits merchants' houses, the 400y old Japanese Covered Bridge & market.

Day 6 – Thursday 10th October
A morning visit to the My Son ruins.
The afternoon is free to explore Hoi An.

Day 7 – Friday 11th October - v
Travel by road back to Danang then over the Hai Van Pass to
Hue for a two-night stay.

Day 8 – Saturday 12th October - ]  v
A full day touring
Hue includes a morning boat cruise to the Thien Mu Pagoda and a visit to the Imperial Citadel. In the afternoon visit the elaborate mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc and the Khai Dinh tombs.

Day 9 – Sunday 13th October - Q
A short flight to
Hanoi is followed by a tour of the city including the One Pillar Pagoda, the Fine Arts Museum and Lake of the Restored Sword. A traditional water puppet show in the evening is optional.

Day 10 – Monday 14th October - ]  v
Drive to
Halong Bay, a Unesco World Heritage site. Enjoy a seafood lunch while cruising around the spectacular bay where 3,000 rocky islands emerge from the emerald green waters. The night is spent in Halong.

Day 11 – Tuesday 15th October - v
Return to
Hanoi stopping at the Bat Trang village famous for its blue and white pottery. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 12 – Wednesday 16th October - Q
A short flight brings us to
Vientiane, the peaceful capital of Laos. An afternoon city tour which will take in Wat Sisaket with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, Wat Prakeo, Wat Simuang, the Tat Luang Monument and Vientiane's own Arc de Triomphe, the Anousavari Monument.

Day 13 – Thursday 17th October - Q
Fly to the former Royal capital of
Laos - Luang Prabang. On arrival drive to the hotel before setting out to explore some of the sights of this peaceful, provincial town.

Day 14 – Friday 18th October - ]
Today cruise the mighty
Mekong River and visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves where thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues are crammed into the two caves. Following a picnic lunch visit the weaving village of Ban Phanom.

Day 15 – Saturday 19th October - Q
An early morning visit to Luang Prabang Market is made before flying back to
Vientiane.

Day 16 – Sunday 20th October - Q
Fly via
Bangkok to Siem Reap in Cambodia for a three-night stay.

Day 17 – Monday 21st October
Siem Reap is the base for exploring the fabled temples of
Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer empire. Tours of the temples include the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat, the South Gate of Angkor Thom, Bayon, Banteay Srei temples, the Elephant Terrace. The day ends with a spectacular sunset at Phnom Bakheng.

Day 18 – Tuesday 22nd October
Further exploration of the impressive ancient ruins.

Day 19 – Wednesday 23rd October - Q
Afternoon flight to
Bangkok connecting with a flight to London. -  Arrive at Heathrow in the evening – 19.35pm – Overnight at Heathrow

Day 20 – Thursday 24th October - Q 07.35 Flight on BMI to Edinburgh
